In late June, DJI recently announced a special event set for New York City on the 18th July. But, for some reason, they’ve pushed the date back, much to the annoyance of many journalists and publishers.
Serial DJI leaker @OsitaLV has, for some time now, been alluding to two new ‘Mavic 2’ models in development.
The recently leaked image show what looks like two camera housings, which seems to confirm a couple of options will be on offer.
The larger of these looks big enough to contain a 1″ sensor. Additionally, @OsitaLV is hinting it may also have a mechanical zoom lens.
What’s exciting about these ideas are DJI seem to be heading towards a modular system for a highly portable drone. Could this mean an upcoming suite of interchangeable cameras? This would provide scope for all sorts of use cases, choice of focal length, thermal imaging, etc.
Interestingly, DJI may elect to loose the ‘Pro’ moniker. Perhaps a package with the larger sensor camera will be the ‘Pro’ package and the actual aircraft will be simply be named the Mavic 2 going forward?
Either way, this looks set to change the aerial imaging game once again.
@OsitaLV has also described a gimbal-like unit which can house the Mavic 2 modular gimbal/s. His latest tweet form the 8th July shows a pretty legitimate looking technical diagram and the device is also shown in the leaked image.
This will effectively mean a fully modular Osmo / Mavic system.
Here’s the specifications @OsitaLV has described this new Mavic may offer:
- 360º obstacle sensing
- Infrared 3D sensing for low light obstacle avoidance
- Uprated motors
- 33 mins flight time
- APAS 2.0
- OCUSYNC 2.0
- 12MP 1/1.7″ CMOS
- 20MP 1″ CMOS
- 4K 60p
- SONY STARVIS™ 10 bit sensors
- Quickshot Panorama mode
More photo’s have emerged from @OsitaLV showing a ‘Mavic Enterprise’ with red decals sporting some hefty looking top mounted payloads. One looks like some sort of 360º sensor, and is that other thing a…speaker, or heavyweight detector of sorts?!
Additionally, the main camera gimbal shown looks far more like the DJI Phantom 4’s by design.
This is getting exciting.
